Lean & Free author dies at 46
FRUIT HEIGHTS, UT Dana Thornock Rasmussen, popular lecturer,
author and creator of The Lean & Free Lifestyle, passed away at her home
Sunday August 14, 2005, from complications of systemic sclerosa.
Dana’s Lean & Free wellness and weight control program attracted thousands from across the country to her practices of eating a balanced diet, participating in regular exercise and positive self-talk.
She authored three books; Eat and Be Lean, Lean & Free 2000 Plus: Ultimate Wellness Weight Control Lifestyle and Dana’s Cookbook: Cooking Lean Not Extreme. She produced videos Enjoying the Freedom; Where Do I Start, Dana; I Need to Know; and Freedom to Eat. In addition, she created and marketed Fat-Burning Acceleration Planners, Lean & Free Lecture Series and Study Guides, Lean and Free 2000 Plus books on tapes and Lean & Free Personalized Coaching.
As a lecturer, she spoke for Brigham Young University’s Education Week and Women’s Conference series as well as the Marriott Business School’s Center for Entrepreneur Design. She has also consulted with educational, government and civic leaders.
She was born September 24, 1958, to Wayne Orton and Carolea Nielsen and raised in Layton, Utah. Dana graduated from Layton High School and later graduated with honors from Weber State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Child and Family Studies with an emphasis in nutrition. In 1978, she married Nyle Thornock. Together Nyle and Dana had four sons; Aaron, Tyson, Riley and Chase. Nyle passed away in 1989 and two years later Dana married Martin Rasmussen.
She was diagnosed with systemic sclerosa, or scleroderma, in November of 2004. According to information from the Scleroderma Foundation, “systemic sclerosis, is a chronic connective tissue disease generally classified as one of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases. The word “scleroderma” comes from two Greek words: “sclero” meaning hard, and “derma” meaning skin. Hardening of the skin is one of the most visible manifestations of the disease.” Approximately 300,000 people nationally are affected by the disease.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Friday August 18, 2005 at the Fruit Height Stake Center, 170 North Mountain Road, with a viewing held the night before at Layton Linquist Mortuary.
Proceeds from any future Lean & Free product sales will be donated to the Dana Thornock Rasmussen Dance Scholarship fund at Brigham Young University.
